Restorative Yoga

Restorative yoga is a gentle, passive practice that allows both the body and mind to relax completely. Although it involves some of the same poses common in more active styles of yoga, props are used to relieve any physical tension or gripping. Blankets, bolsters and straps are stacked and arranged so that the whole body can melt into a supported stretch.

Comfort is the name of the game. Once the body is fully supported with props, postures are usually held for several to up to twenty minutes. The teacher might dim the lights and cover students with blankets; in many ways it can feel like a yoga nap time! Restorative yoga truly allows for complete relaxation.

Restorative yoga is a very soothing practice. It stimulates the parasympathic nervous system, reigning in the fight-or-flight stress response that damages the body and mind. This brings many benefits, including lower blood pressure, improved digestion, better sleep, and more energy.

Is restorative yoga for you ?

It's safe to say that everyone could use a little restorative yoga in their lives. It's the perfect practice to offset the stresses of daily life. Restorative yoga brings the kind of deep relaxation that all of us need but rarely make time for.

Whether you're brand new to yoga or have been practicing for decades, there's a place in your yoga practice for restorative. You might use it as a compliment to more vigorous forms of yoga, or make it your main practice if stress-relief is your primary goal.
