Vinyasa Yoga

Also called flow yoga, vinyasa is a relatively new but incredibly popular yoga style. All movements are linked to the breath, and poses often flow from one to the next within the span of a breathing cycle. This makes vinyasa yoga almost like a rhythmic dance.

Because vinyasa yoga doesn't have a strict dogma confining it to one particular expression, classes can vary quite a bit. Teachers like to get creative, designing sequences that challenge the body to move in unusual ways and adding music into the mix. The transitions between poses are just as important as the postures themselves and call for a new understanding of focus and balance.

The pace of vinyasa classes vary from slow to vigorous. However, expect to flow through sun salutations and warrior poses; signature vinyasa moves. The end of any class is usually spent winding down in seated and reclining postures, and finishes off with a rejuvenating rest in corpse pose (savasana).

Is vinyasa yoga for you ?

If you're looking for a fun physical challenge, vinyasa is the way to go. It's best suited for those who are ready to work up a sweat. You'll leave class feeling like you've had a proper workout, but still received all the stress-busting benefits of yoga.

Vinyasa is also great if you're feeling sluggish or looking to lose weight. The energetic, flowing movements banish lethargy and burn calories. This makes it a great practice for melting away the winter blues, too.
